South Sudan will host a regional summit of the Nile Basin Initiative.

South Sudan has announced that the 29th Nile Council of Ministers (Nile-COM) meeting will take place in Juba on Friday.

The Nile Basin Initiative is a regional organization comprised of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

“The government of the Republic of South Sudan will host this year’s 29th Nile-COM meeting on Friday, June 26th.” Furthermore, ministers for water affairs from member states and members of the Diplomatic core will attend the inaugural session of the Nile-COM conference,” South Sudan’s Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, Manawa Peter Gatkuoth, told reporters in Juba on Wednesday.

“During this event, Vice President James Wani Igga, the guest of honor, will unveil crucial Nile basin apps and the Nile Basin Atlas,” he added.

South Sudan is a participant of the Nile Basin Initiative, and ministers for water affairs from the member countries will attend the inaugural session of the Nile Council of Ministers.

Engineer Sylvester Anthony Matemu, the Nile Basin Initiative’s Executive Director, said that seven ministers from the area have already confirmed their attendance in the Nile Basin Initiative meeting and would come on Thursday.

“This governance gathering has a lot of benefits, and a lot of ministers want to come to Juba.” “So far, seven ministers have confirmed their attendance, and the rest will participate digitally,” Matemu added.

South Sudan expects to profit greatly from the Nile Basin Initiative projects, according to Manawa Peter Gatkuoth, Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources.

The projects include the Lakki Hydropower Plant, which is worth $30 million, the Malakal-BENTIU Transmission Line, which is worth $52 million, the Shukoli Hydropower Plant, which is worth $30 million, and the Baro-Akobo Sobat WATER Resource Development, which is worth $2 million.

The minister made the announcement as South Sudan prepares to host the 29th Annual Council of Ministers Nile-Com meeting in Juba on November 26, 2021.
